Ono decides to take Ichiro to the movie the next day, but his daughter Noriko says she has made plans. Ichiro is fascinated by a poster for a monster movie that he saw at the train station. Ono is annoyed because he feels his daughters believe he knows the real reason why the marriage negotiations broke off and is hiding it from them. Noriko is currently at the start of new marriage talks with a man named Taro Saito, but at nearly twenty-six, she is considered old to be unmarried. The whole family is concerned about the marriage prospects of Ono’s younger daughter Noriko, because, a year before, Noriko had been in marriage talks with a man named Jiro Miyake when his family withdrew from negotiations under mysterious circumstances. Ono recalls the previous month’s visit of his older daughter Setsuko and her son Ichiro who live in a different town. The narrator is Masuji Ono, a retired artist who lost both his son and wife during the war which also caused serious damage to his beautiful house. ![]() Charlie’s thoughts are also very scattered while he is writing giving it a personal feel while also giving us an insight into Charlie’s character. The whole novel is letter written by Charlie to an unnamed recipient. The writing style of this novel also really help to add to the realistic elements of this novel. The climax of the novel comes very late making the ending seem slightly rushed, but it was still a novel that I did not want to end. Most of the conflicts that Charlie faces deal directly with these problems. There are multiple references to drugs, alcohol, abuse, and sex throughout the novel. Many of the themes that are prevalent in this book do make it more of a young adult novel and I would not suggest it for anyone under 15. ![]() I highly recommend this book to those who are looking for a good read about relevant high school topics. From new friends, drugs, suicide, and abuse this story is a revealing look into a teenage boys struggle to just fit in during his first year of high school. “Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky is the emotional story of Charlie's first year of high school. Going into high school can be a scary experience for anyone, especially for a social outcast like Charlie. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I've read more modern books where a criminal that had either special access to online databases (like Google) or was a good hacker would learn about a victim by putting together bits of information on where they shop, what they order, etc. He learned as much as he could about what the woman likes, then studied about the subjects and pretended to be their ideal partner with similar tastes, etc. The main character in this book used a technique to ingratiate himself with some women. The main problem was that the women believed everything they were told by a stranger, mainly because they wanted to believe it. But that's probably because I've read a lot of mysteries, and I just hate to see them make mistakes I easily recognize. This one was pretty suspenseful, although it was hard not to try to shake some sense into some of the characters. This was my first book by Ira Levin - I don't know how I've missed out for so long, but I plan to make up for it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() TLDR, it's not what you're expecting, it's better. We might get a France every now and again, but this is an incredibly well written book about medieval SWEDEN. Even Christian Cameron had to make his protagonists English, even though theyre barely in England. Vikings, English Archers, English Knights. I'm an American who knows more about Crecy than Gettysburg because historical fiction writers(and consumers, I imagine) only seem care about English history. And most importantly ITS NOT ABOUT ENGLAND. "They don't even get to Jerusalem til the end!", to which I answer: the book is called "the ROAD TO JERUSALEM and not "WE GOT TO JERUSALEM EARLY" That person sold me a book. I believe somebody was complaining on here about a "misleading title". ![]() I never realized how universally atheist new books are becoming, and having just a good guy priest, not a former badass(there is one of these, though), not secretly working against the protagonist, or whatever trope that's going around, is ironically refreshing. It's a very positive and more importantly to me NOT PREACHY view into Christian philosophy, at least thats how I see it. Went looking for trashy historical fiction.Īnd I got this. ![]() ![]() ![]() While it may be the birthing bed of the first fascist movements, its role in the war has been relegated to the background if most history books are to be believed. When picturing the Second World War, most people think of the Eastern European, African, or Pacific theaters where the Allies and Axis were waging war… however, there were many smaller and more “forgotten” fronts if you will, and Italy was certainly one of them. As it happens, people are still studying those six years to this day and uncovering new stories and facts that slowly help us build a more complete and accurate picture of what happened during that time period. ![]() ![]() Exploring the Forgotten Front with Mark SullivanĪs you no doubt already know, WWII was a very complex affair and the history we were taught in schools was vague and general at best, only covering the most important dates and events that shaped the world of today. ![]() ![]() After the war he sometimes argued politically with younger African Americans, but he never forsook either the Republican party or the cause of black civil and political rights. ![]() ![]() There are plenty of laugh out loud lines in the book, as well as a romance between the main character and a famous rock star and a secondary character who is obsessed with clothes. In between all the over explanations, I found myself wondering if young adults would actually like this book. Not to mention the fact that I kept shouting at the characters as they blundered their way through this book. There were many moments when I was ready to throw my book at the wall because it was that simple to work out the twists and turns well before they had even arrived.
